The inspiration behind Side Face is intriguing. Cheng visualized the living space as a cuboid diagonally cut into two halves, each half a rhombohedron, an individual unit. These units can be joined together, allowing for a unique exploration of space that goes beyond traditional vertical or horizontal compartmentalization.
What sets Side Face apart is its thoughtful consideration of the residents' needs. Designed for senior citizens planning their retirement, the design includes open-plan spaces, roomy passages, and accessible design elements. The goal is not just to provide habitable conditions for the elders, but to enhance their lifestyle with multiple functions.
The realization of Side Face involved the use of various materials such as marbles, wood veneers, natural stone skins, and hairline stainless steel trims. These materials subtly delineate the spatial expression of each area, adding a touch of oriental elegance to the contemporary design. The construction area spans 213 square meters, providing ample space for the residents.
The design also boasts of a unique interaction. The living flows are divided in the secant of splice, starting from the entrance to the dining area. There are spacious rooms for socializing, while private bedrooms and master walk-in closets are discreetly placed alongside the wall. Through this spatial linear arrangement, the design achieves an open plan while preserving privacy and flexibility.
Side Face was conceptualized and executed between June 2019 and January 2020 in Taipei city. The design was a result of meticulous research and planning, with a focus on catering to different sizes of family or friend gatherings to enrich the residents' retirement life. The project also overcame challenges related to accessible design, ensuring wide passages in every corner and a layout without any unused space.
In conclusion, Side Face is a remarkable example of innovative residential interior design. It is not just a living space, but a thoughtfully designed environment that caters to the needs of an aging society. With its unique concept, elegant aesthetics, and accessible design, it truly deserves the Bronze A' Design Award it has been bestowed with.
